Vargas is not in the hotel room at five in the morning. I am awake at five because I am old. When you are old, you go to bed early and sleep very little. I am thirty-four. Yesterday I was thirty-three. Today is also France's birthday. Vive la France. On my birthday, I decide not to worry about Vargas. I take a shower, make coffee in the miniature pot with the single serving packet of coffee, and I stuff my duffel bag with my things and leave Vargas' duffel splayed open like a filet on his bed. I step into the hall, where I see the team mechanic, Saul, loading the elevator full of bicycles. He sleeps with them in his room. Saul is the only other American on the team. I watch Saul as he hunches over the bikes, maneuvering them with his left hand while his short, limp right hand clings to his chest pocket. Once he has filled the elevator with all our bikes, he wonders how he will ride down to the lobby with them, so he takes out a couple of bikes to make room for himself. I take the stairs, careful not to spill my coffee.
